Current Objective(s)  Current Assignment  Resources
I can research examples of the elements or principles of design.

UNIT: Elements & Principles of Design
  1. Do the daily warm-up activity. Save it to the warm up folder as LastnameFirstname Date.
  2. Our first project is a poster that illustrates either the elements of design or the principles of design. This project has three parts:
    • Research (2 classes)-finding background information and examples of similar posters
    • Drafting (2 classes)-sketching possible layouts and illustrations, defining terms
    • Publishing (4 classes)-digitally creating your poster, citing sources, and exporting your poster as a PDF.
  3. Read the project checklist (in the Resources column). The checklist is how your project will be graded, so you should refer to it often.
  4. The first thing you need to do is decide whether your poster will illustrate the elements of design or the principles of design. These posters will be printed and laminated for you to reference throughout the semester, so you're encouraged to do the opposite of whatever the person next to you is doing.
  5. Download the Elements & Principles of Design Research worksheet and open it in Microsoft Word. Begin filling out this worksheet. Some sources that you can use are:
    • Google Images
    • Art/museum websites
    • Youtube (videos explaining the elements and principles)
    • Online dictionaries
  6. At the end of class, be sure to click Save As to save your worksheet to the class folder. It is currently in your Downloads folder, so if you just click Save you won't receive any credit.

  1. Do the daily warm-up activity. Save it to the warm up folder as LastnameFirstname Date.
  2. You may choose to draft your project digitally (using Sketch.io, which is what we will use for the final product) or using paper and pencil. Graphic designers use both in their day-to-day work, so choose whichever method you are more comfortable with.
    • Digital drafters: download the appropriate draft worksheet from the Resources column and fill it out in Microsoft Word. You can export your sketches as JPEG files and insert them into Word. Save your draft to the class folder.
    • Paper-and-pencil drafters: print the appropriate worksheet (use the printer that has Brother in the name. It will print out on my desk). Fill it out, staple the pages together, and hand it to me when you are finished.
  3. Please keep in mind that this is a draft. Your sketches should convey a general idea, not be detailed masterpieces.

  1. Do the daily warm-up activity. Save it to the warm up folder as LastnameFirstname Date.
  2. Today we are going to make a Works Cited page to give credit to anyone whose ideas inspired your poster.
  3. Look back at your research document and ask yourself the following questions about each of your sources:
    1. Did I base any part of my design on this source?
    2. Did I use any ideas from this source in my definitions?
    3. Did I base my layout on this source?
  4. If you answered yes to any of the above questions, create a citation for that source in EasyBib (link in the Resources column).
  5. When you are finished, export your citations as a Word document. Download and open the document.
  6. Click Insert>Page Break to insert a page before your Works Cited. Insert your poster JPEG into the first page. Adjust the margins and image size as you see fit.
  7. Add your name and poster title at the bottom of the second page.
  8. Once the document is formatted to your liking, click Save As and change the document type (underneath where you type in the document name) to PDF.
  9. Save the document to Ready to be graded.

UNIT: Copyright & Fair Use

  1. Do the daily warm-up activity. Save it to the warm up folder as LastnameFirstname Date.
  2. The next four classes are going to be about copyright and fair use. Copyright laws protect what you make as a graphic designer, and misunderstanding or ignoring copyright can have serious consequences. As an overview, today we are going to play a choose-your-own-adventure game.
  3. Click the link in the Resources column to go to Digital Compass.
  4. When you get to the home screen (the one that says ANYWHERE), select the letter E at the end to play the game Hack-A-Wrong. If you have already played Hack-A-Wrong for Computer Applications, you can use today's class to catch up or play games.
  5. Experiment with different story choices for the duration of today's class.
  6. When you reach an ending, play the mini-game. You can play the mini-game as many times as you want. Please show me your best score so I can enter it in RenWeb.
